Jahrhundert.
English: In the Middle Ages and until the 18th Century, fine leather shoes were used. To protect such shoes from fouling when worn outdoors (due to human waste, animal excrement and other filth), additional wooden and/or metal overshoes were used. Here are two examples of clogs, or "patten" shoes, displayed at the Deutsches Schuhmuseum Hauenstein, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, where these examples were photographed.
Left, a find from the castle Uda, EMCDDA, 14-15th Century, leather-banded original wood, partial reconstruction. Rright, wood and iron, Trippe, Netherlands 18th Century |
