Summary

[edit]
Description

Set of pen and ink sketches of the Society of Friends annual meeting at Devonshire House, London (May, 1860), bound as booklet. It contains seven drawings, plus front page, by John Joseph Willson (ca.1837-1903), of Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire, England. Showing first picture: "Friends on their way to yearly meeting; distractions of Derby Day." In 1860, Epsom Derby Day was on Wednesday 24 May.

To get this view today, you would have to stand outside St Botolph Without Bishopsgate, on Bishopsgate, London, facing the entrance to Houndsditch (now an alley where it joins Bishopsgate). The buildings in the background of the drawing are all now demolished, and replaced with modern buildings. St Botolphs is still there.
