Title |
Drawing of a Roman nail cleaner |
||
Description |
English: Copper-alloy nail-cleaner, perhaps of Colchester type 2a (Crummy 1983, 58), made from sheet metal and now crumpled but still complete. The top is rounded and has a large perforation to form a suspension loop. Below this is a leaf-shaped or sub-triangular body with wide rounded shoulders; the nail-cleaner is bent at the shoulders but below this it tapers to a point. There is a ring-and-dot motif at the junction of the loop and the body of the nail-cleaner, one at each shoulder, and one in the centre of the object. Each dot has perforated the metal. The point is divided into two by a groove and both halves are now bent. The reverse is undecorated and appears to be rather rougher than the front. The unbent length is c. 43 mm and the width at the shoulders is 17 mm. Roman, perhaps 1st to 2nd century AD. |
