Summary

[edit]
Description In Plymouth Sound, it was named for Francis Drake, it was previously named St Michael's island after the chapel on the island, and then St Nicholas Island when the chapel was re-dedicated. From 1549 the island began to be fortified as a defence against the French and Spanish. After the restoration, it served as a prison for Roundhead Generals implicated in the regicide of Charles I. The Battery was updated throughout the 19th century up to 1942. No longer needed for defence purposes from 1956, the war office left in 1963 and the island was leased to Plymouth City Council who established a youth adventure training centre on the island which operated until 1989. Former Plymouth Argyle chairman, Dan McCauley bought the island for £384,000 from the Crown Estate in 1995 with plans to build a hotel which were subsequently refused planning permission.
