Rita Charon, M.D., Ph.D., gave the 2019 Gadlin Lecture on the NIH campus on September 24. Her talk was entitled, "To See Life Everywhere: The Urgency of Personal Stories in Medicine." Dr. Charon is a physician and literary scholar whose research focuses on the consequences of narrative medicine practice, reflective clinical practice, and health-care team effectiveness. She is the Founder and Executive Director of the Program in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University and Chair of the Department of Medical Humanities and Ethics, Columbia Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. She was recently honored as the 2018 National Endowment of the Humanities Jefferson Lecturer. Named in honor of the first NIH Ombudsman, Dr. Howard Gadlin, who retired in 2015, the Gadlin lecture series is an annual NIH cultural event honoring Dr. Gadlin’s commitment to scholarship, creative problem-solving, and conciliation and cooperation in a competitive environment.
