Description
English: Chert from the Mississippian of Tennessee, USA.

Dover Chert was extensively used by early American Indians to make various tools. Prehistoric chert quarries are known near Dover, Tennessee. Chert is a cryptocrystalline, quartzose sedimentary rock, although this specimen is microcrystalline. Chert can have a biogenic or a chemical origin. Dover Chert occurs as nodules within a Mississippian-aged limestone unit.

Stratigraphy: attributed to the St. Louis Limestone, Middle Mississippian

Locality: undisclosed, but possibly from near the town of Dover, Stewart County, northwestern Tennessee, USA
