Description
English: "A los Héroes Populares que el Dos de Mayo de 1808 (...)".

Sumptuously ornamented commemorative plaque first affixed in 1908 by the 'Circulo de Bellas Artes' to commemorate the first centenary of the Uprising of the population on May 2, 1808 against the French napoléonic occupation of Spain, triggering the long "Guerra de la Independencia" (Spanish War of Independence, 1808-1814).
Similar plaques were simultaneously affixed Plaza Dos de Mayo (<► File:Dos_de_Mayo_–_Plaza_Dos_de_Mayo.jpg) and on the façade of the City Hall, Puerta del Sol (<► File:Dos_de_Mayo_–_Madrid,_Puerta_del_Sol.jpg).

Note : the present plaque has been posted in 1947 by the Municipal Authorities to replace the original one ; on that occasion, the word "napoleonicas" has been changed into "extranjeras".
