Description |
English: Anonymous painting of the "Dordtse vierling", quadruplets born 9 June 1621 to Cornelia Jans of Dordrecht. The daughter Elisabeth died after only an hour and a half and is shown reclining on a pillow and wearing a death shirt and rosemary wreath (to keep evil spirits away from the unbaptized). Pieter, Jannetje and Maria were baptized 3 days later in the Augustijnenkerk and they are portrayed alive here in swaddling clothes but according to the inscriptions above their heads, none of them survived a week. |
