Description A statue of Maj. Gen. William J. Donovan stands in solemn watch next to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) Memorial. Donovan was the head of the OSS and is considered the "Father of Modern American Intelligence Gathering," the CIA considers him the first Director of Central Intelligence.The Donovan statue was dedicated on Oct. 26, 1988, and was commissioned by the late Director of Central Intelligence William J. Casey. A single star carved into the wall to the left of the stature represents the 116 officers who lost their lives while serving in the OSS during WWII. The names of the fallen are listed in the glass-encased OSS Book of Honor which sits on a marble pedestal. (To learn more about the CIA, visit www.cia.gov).
