flower beds and break off a number of the most beauti-ful flowers he could find and place them above wherehis master slept his long, last sleep. Pedro would thenwalk away to his favorite spot and sit on his haunches andlook as if dazed or in deep meditation, perhaps wonderingif at some time in the future he would ever again behold IN PROSE AXD RHYME. 71 the kindly face of his old master walking amid the palmsand magnolias of his beautiful garden, or sitting beneaththe spreading branches of an old oak, which had been tohim more than a friend.
Text Appearing After Image:
XXVI. QUEEX VICTORIAS FAVORITE DOG. Twas a Pomeranian—honored by the great, good Queen,Who wished it at her bedside before the closing scene:She fondled and caressed it, a message to her kind.Though ruling many millions, she had dumb creatures onher mind. With all the multitudinous duties of the Queen, sover-eign of the greatest empire of the world, she did not forgetto give care and thought to the animals of her household. 72 DOGS OF ALL NATIONS One of the most beautiful and tender acts of her eighty-two years of life, was the request, (just a little whilebefore her spirit passed beyond land and sea), to haveher favorite dog brought to her, whe~ she patted andstroked it; which was meant, no doubt, as a gentle com-mand to her subjects to treat with kindness and human-ity Gods dumb animals.
