Français : Exemplaire reconstitué de Dodo (Raphus cucullatus) . Cet objet a fait partie de l'exposition "Ces chers disparus"présentée au public en 2000 par le Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Lille (MHNL)
Cartel : Dodo de l'Île Maurice (reconstitution) ; Cet oiseau, incapable de voler, vivait sur l'île Maurice où il n'avait à craindre aucun prédateur. Mais l'île fut découverte en 1598 ; A chaque passage de bateau, les marins le chassaient pour se ravitailler, tantids que les chats, chiens et rats descendus des bateaux s'en prenaient aux jeunes et aux oeufs. Le dodo disparut définitivement vers 1681, moins d'un siècle après sa rencontre avec les hommes.
Il n'existe aucun spécimen naturalisé (empaillé) de cette animal nulle part au monde, car l’espèce a disparu avant que les processus de conservation de la peau d'oiseau soient bien maîtrisés. Il ne reste aucun squelette complet non plus (ceux qui sont présentés dans certains musées sont des reconstitutions, basées sur l’assemblage de quelques ossements de différents individus). Tous les dodos entiers d’Europe ont été perdus, il restait un spécimen à Oxford qui a brûlé, il en reste une patte et un morceau de la tête (le bec), avec un peu de peau.
