English: Dob's Linn - birthplace of the Ordovician Fieldwork here by the 19th century geologist Charles Lapworth led him to propose a new geological system, the Ordovician, between the Cambrian and Silurian. Fossil plankton in shale beds at Dob's Linn are now taken to define the Ordovician-Silurian boundary world-wide.
The story is given in Peter Toghill's book 'The Geology of Britain' (Swan Hill Press 2000). |
