English: Staff Sgt. Luke Thompson receives a Joint Service Achievement Medal before the Djiboutian Soldier Recognition Ceremony, Camp Lemonnier, March 25, 2014. Thompson was the key player in ensuring the Djiboutian soldier’s heroic actions were formally recognized. The Djiboutian soldiers rescued Susan Craig, a former U.S. Marine Corps pilot, and Marine Corps Maj. Heath Ruppert, Craig’s co-pilot, following the Feb. 16, 2006 crash of two U.S. Marine Corps CH-53 helicopters off the coast of Djibouti, which killed 10 of the 12 personnel aboard. Thompson is with the 443rd Civil Affairs Battalion. (U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. Sgt. Jasmine Reif) |
