Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Divanyolu road, which passes through the middle of the Historic Peninsula, is one of the main transit routes that the city if İstanbul has evolved around. The road is established on the inner city section of Via Egnatia, the route that ran from Thrace to Byzantium. It was called Mese in the Roman and Byzantine periods and Divanyolu (The Road of the Imperial Council) in the Ottoman period. Originally the road began at the Milion Forum around the Higha Sophia, passing through the Constantinus Forum (Foros), where Çemberlitaş is today, ending at the Tauri forum, which is Beyazıt Square today. In the Ottoman period the viziers, soldiers and delegates used this route to get to their mansions in Fatih and Aksaray after they left the Imperial council in Topkapı Palace. Today the route consists of the Yeniçeriler Street and Divan Yolu Street. Between 1957 and 1958 the government of the day decided to enlarge the route. Unfortunately during construction a lot of monumental buildings were either destroyed or removed. Çorlulu Ali Paşa and Atik Ali Paşa complexes are two important examples. Today the street is officially closed to all vehicles except the tram.

Tarihî yarımadanın tam ortasından geçen Divanyolu, İstanbul’un kaburgasını oluşturan ana yolun rotasıdır; kent onun çevresinde şekillenmiştir. Cadde, Antik dönemde Trakya’dan Byzantion’a varan yolun (Via Egnatia) şehir içinde kalan kısmını oluşturdu. Ayasofya yakınındaki Milion Meydanı’ndan başlar, Çemberlitaş’ın bulunduğu Constantinus Forumu’ndan (Foros) geçerek Tauri Forumu’na, yani günümüzün Beyazıt Meydanı’na ulaşırdı. Roma ve Bizans döneminde Mese olarak adlandırıldı. Osmanlı döneminde ise, Topkapı Sarayı'nda yapılan Divan-ı Hümâyun sonrası vezir, asker ve elçilerin arabalarıyla buradan Fatih ve Aksaray’daki konaklarına gitmesi nedeniyle Divanyolu adını aldı. Bu yolu günümüzde Yeniçeriler Caddesi ile Divanyolu Caddesi oluşturur. 1957-1958 yıllarında dönemin hükümeti, Ordu, Yeniçeriler ve Divanyolu caddelerinin genişletilmesine karar verdi. Cadde genişletme çalışmaları sırasında birçok eser tahrip edildi; bazılarının yerleri değiştirildi, bazıları ise tamamen ortadan kaldırıldı. Çorlulu Ali Paşa ve Atik Ali Paşa külliyeleri, zarara uğrayan yapılara birer örnektir. Bu caddeler, tramvay haricinde araç trafiğine kapalıdır.
