Summary
[edit]DescriptionDisused railway platform in Walsingham - geograph.org.uk - 1208598.jpg |
English: Disused railway platform in Walsingham This view was taken in southerly direction along the former railway platform at Walsingham Station. A footpath, the Pilgrim's Way, now follows the dismantled railway trackbed in southerly direction. A coach park occupies the space on the other side which once used to be the goods yard.
Walsingham once used to be connected to the railway network by the Norwich via Fakenham, Dereham and Wymondham route, with the final regular steam journey taking place on the 17th September 1955. Diesel units took over the next day, with but for a short while some Saturday extras continued to be steam operated. Steam-hauled freight continued into the early 1960s. Despite an hourly passenger service to Norwich which took between 32 and 40 minutes, the increased use of road transport lead to a decline in passenger numbers and the line from Dereham to Wells finally closed on October 5th 1964. See http://www.walsingham-memories.co.uk/railways/railways.html for a more detailed history. |
