Summary

[edit]
Description

I'd guess that a lot of people would assume that growing shrubs from seed would be a bit of a long old process and not commercially worthwhile. I'd have to disagree. The parent Dipelta (at Pool Meadow) set very few seeds (they look very like stick-insect eggs) and they weren't easy to collect, but what I did get , sown fresh last autumn, germinated almost immediately, overwintered safely in the greenhouse and grew away strongly this summer. These seedlings are actually smaller than they were because I've already taken cuttings from them. Dipelta are notoriously difficult from cuttings, but taken from seedlings they often root better than from mature plants. As yet, after two weeks on the mist bench they haven't rooted but they look healthy enough, whereas cuttings from the mature plant would have mostly dropped all their leaves by now, so I'm very hopeful.

The Zanthoxylum on the right (Thanks Alan) were sown back in the spring and have also grown away very well.
