Description

Just outside the Maiden Tower is this bronze diorama showing the ancient walled city of Icheri Sheher, complete with the city walls. Outside of the congested Icheri Sheher, I can only guess that the rest of the diorama depicts the relatively sparsely populated Baheri Sheher or outer city. We have been walking for nearly two hours now, and have just reached the Maiden Tower, which in the diorama is at the far end on the right. (top right). The sheer sprawl of the Icheri Cheher old quarter astounded me, if this diorama is any indication-

crikey, we have quite a bit still to cover, in that case! (Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 2017)
