| Description |
Dinosaur National Monument is located along the Utah-Colorado border. The Utah portion, located just outside Jensen, is home to the famous quarry where a large number of dinosaur bones were found and are still on display. A look at the quarry and some of its bones. Although many specimens were sent to Andrew Carnegie's Pittsburgh-based museums after discovery in 1909, some have been left where they were found. The dinosaurs here were deposited and buried here 149 million years ago, on what used to be a sand bar on the shores of a river far wider than today's Green River. The most common species is Camarasaurus, a sauropod, though Stegosaurus and meat-eating Allosaurus are also found here. |
