Summary

[edit]
Description This bungalow, located along Dillsboro Road in my hometown of Sylva, North Carolina, is what I would consider to be arguably the best example of the Craftsman/Arts and Crafts style west of Haywood County in the state of North Carolina. Constructed circa 1924, the one-and-a-half story bungalow is the most elaborate execution of the Arts and Crafts movement in the county, and features a simple, brick veneer on the first floor and basement, with half-timbering on the gable ends of the roof, as well as exposed and notched rafters, an enclosed sun porch, and a matching garage. The Craftsman style was popular in the area between about 1910 and 1940, and dozens of homes in the area were built in the style, some larger than this house, but none as elaborate in detailing. The year this house was built, 1924, was also the year a brand new brick high school building was constructed within sight distance across Scott’s Creek at what is now Mark Watson Park, marking the moment that the public education system in Jackson County lept into the modern age. Today, though the old high school has been absent for 29 years, this house remains as a testament to the forward-looking optimism, down-to-earth design, and simple, yet elegant aesthetics, all of which defined the decade in which it was built.
