Summary

[edit]
Description The Jarrett Memorial Baptist Church occupies these two buildings on Church Street in the town of Dillsboro, North Carolina. The Jarrett Memorial Baptist Church was built in 1937 to replace an earlier wood-frame church from 1888 that was destroyed in a fire that year. R.F. Jarrett donated labor and rock, including marble, which may have come from a quarry about 50 miles west at Marble, North Carolina. The gothic revival-style Church building has served the congregation ever since, and was renamed from Dillsboro Baptist Church in honor of Jarrett as a result. Next door, the Jarrett Memorial Church has their fellowship hall in the old Dillsboro Methodist Church building, which was constructed in 1899 and closed due to declining attendance in 1960, shortly thereafter being sold to the Baptist congregation. The old wood-frame church has been completely covered in vinyl siding to keep maintenance costs low, and has had all its windows and doors replaced, removing much of the historic character. However, as Dillsboro does have a strong preservation ordinance and is strongly driven by the idea that the town’s historic architecture is a major asset, these buildings have been preserved, and are unlikely to be threatened with demolition; this is also why the old Methodist Church was reused by the Baptist congregation rather than being simply knocked down for a new, purpose-built fellowship hall.
