Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Differential weathering and differential erosion are often (jokingly) the default explanations for odd-looking rocks or unusual geologic scenery (e.g., Arches National Park & Fantasy Canyon in Utah). But they are important, real-life processes. Differential weathering and differential erosion refer to hard, resistant rocks & minerals weathering and eroding slowly and softer, less-resistant rocks & minerals eroding quickly. The rock seen here no provenance or specific geologic information accompanying it, apart from it being from a New Mexico lake deposit. Some rockhounds call specimens like this as "New Mexico Silt Columns". The gray material is silty. The brownish-colored, projecting layers may be chert (?). Regardless, the gray silty layers are relatively soft and have weathered away more quickly than the brown layers - classic differential weathering and erosion.
