Das Mahnmal wurde am 9. November 1945 auf dem Kriegsgefangenen-Friedhof Hörsten enthüllt. Dort steht heute eine Replik, da das Original 1980 zerstört wurde. Es trägt die Inschrift: „Hier sind begraben 50 000 sowjetische Kriegsgefangene, zu Tode gequält in deutsch-faschistischer Gefangenschaft.“ Auf der Rückseite steht: „Ruhet in Frieden, teure Genossen, die Erinnerung an Euch wird ewig weiterleben in den Herzen der Völker der Sowjetunion.“ (jeweils übersetzt aus dem Russischen).
