[edit]DescriptionDidcot 'City of Truro' geograph-2514439-by-Ben-Brooksbank.jpg |
English: Ex-GWR 'City of Truro' at Didcot, View northward beside Didcot station; ex-GWR Paddington - Reading - Swindon/Oxford etc.,ain lines, also terminus of the Didcot, Newbury & Southampton (DN&S) line. 'City of Truro', one of the various Dean 4-4-0s, built in 5/03 as No. 3440 (later 3717) achieved lasting fame on 9 May 1904 by a record 102.3 mph down the bank from Whiteball to Wellington (Somerset) with an Ocean Liner Express, so after withdrawal in 3/31 it was preserved at the York Museum of the LNER (the nucleus of the National Railway Museum). However, in March 1957 it was restored to working order (as No. 3440)and until May 1961 it worked special trains from Swindon as promotions and between whiles on normal services from Didcot on the DNS&S line. (It was restored again in July 1984 - August 1992 and for some months in 2004). Here it is arriving at Didcot in 1957 on the 16.56 stopping train from Southampton, looking very smart. |
