Text Appearing Before Image:
if the inmates of any lone house beyondwould have more pity on their exhausted state. They were dragging themselves along through thelast street, and the child felt that the time was closeat hand when her enfeebled powers would bear nomore. There appeared before them at this juncture, going in the same direction as themselves, a travel-ler on foot, w^ho, with a portmanteau strapped to hisback, leaned upon a stout stick as he walked, andread from a book which he held in his other hand. She is quite exhausted, said the schoolmaster, glancing upward into his face. You have taxedher powers too far, friend. She is perishing of want, rejoined the old man.I never thought how weak and ill she was tillnow. Casting a look upon him, half reproachful andhalf compassionate, the schoolmaster took the childin his arms, and, bidding the old man
