Devil's Club leaves with a bunch of red berries

There was one plant that caused us untold misery. It was a tall plant that had huge leaves in a cluster at the top giving it a parasol effect. The long stalk was bristling with sharp stickers. Breaking a trail through a big patch of these was like tunneling through a pile of needles. And to top it off, every little barb was poisonous. We were soon covered with a mass of little red spots that burned and itched for days. Our clothing was no protection from these “stinging devils.” Robert Storm describing devil’s club in the rain forest, July 5, 1936.
