Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Founder's share of the Derby Canal Company, issued 7 October 1793, printed on vellum. The Derby Canal Act of 1793 authorised a railway connection between the Derby Canal at Little Eaton and the collieries to the north. The bill passed by Parliament printed on the share certificate shows that the purpose of the company was also to build a railway. The Derby Canal share hereby documents the world's first railway construction financed by shares as early as the 18th century. In 1795, the horse-drawn Derby Canal Railway began operations.
