This is a photograph of an architectural monument.
It is on the list of cultural monuments of Hamburg, no. 11980. English: The Hamburg war memorial (officially the monument for the fallen of both world wars) by the city hall with the original inscription from 1931 honoring the soldiers killed in the First World War: “Vierzigtausend Söhne der Stadt ließen ihr Leben für euch, 1914–1918” (forty thousand sons of this city lost their lives for you).
Deutsch: Das Hamburger Ehrenmal (Denkmal für die Gefallenen beider Weltkriege) mit der ursprünglichen Inschrift von 1931 für die Gefallenen des ersten Weltkriegs: „Vierzigtausend Söhne der Stadt ließen ihr Leben für euch, 1914–1918“.
Deutsch: Stele am Fuß der bestehenden Viertelkreistreppe zur Kleinen Alster von Claus Hoffmann 1930-32 mit Relief Trauernde Mutter mit Kind von Ernst Barlach auf der Rückseite 1931 als zentrales Mahnmal für die Gefallenen des Krieges. Rekonstruktion nach 1945 nach Entfernung 1938 durch den NS-Senat.
