[edit]DescriptionDendermonde OLV kerk Teniers Christiana.JPG |
English: Right panel showing Christiana of "The veneration of Christ" by David Teniers, 1617.
Christiana is supposed to be a Scottisch or Anglo Saxon princess, the daughter of King Migranimus (of Migramnus) and Quaan Marona of whom no details are known. She was raised in the pagan belief of her people. One day a beggar knocked at her door and asked for alms. He explained to her about Jesus Christ, it was the beginning of her conversion. When she was baptized she chose the name Christiana. She crossed the channel and settled in a place called Dickelvenna (ook Diclivenna, Ticlivinnum of Tichlinium), now Geraardsbergen. After her death she was regarded as a saint by the people of the area. During the Norman invasions her remains were transferred to Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk in Dendermonde. She became patron saint of the city. |
