Description

"Gaffers tape is your friend" or, "50.6 megapixels of fail" (alternate title)

I rented a Canon 5DS R for the SpaceX Demo1 launch. I used it at the pad for some very high-resolution shots of the Crew Dragon. For the launch, I assumed it would produce a photo superior to my "main" camera.

I had been watching the lightning over the Atlantic for the 45 minutes or so I was setting up, but for some reason, it took me until T minus 45 seconds to realize it might be possible to capture the lightning in a long-exposure launch streak. All I needed to do was pan right. After fighting with the tripod head for 25-seconds, I panned right. I didn't realize until approximately 234-seconds later that I had bumped the zoom from 16mm to 23mm, producing this image, the highest-resolution botched shot I've ever taken. (I missed the top two-thirds of the streak.)

Luckily I was also running my "main" camera (panned left) and that image came out alright, but, I didn't have any lightning in the picture.
