Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Del-Nord Apartments, 1149 Delaware Avenue at West Ferry Street, Buffalo, New York, August 2020. One of several upscale apartment buildings to be constructed on this stretch of Delaware Avenue just after the turn of the 20th century, the handsome, three-story, brown brick Del-Nord was built in 1911 and sports a Neoclassical architectural style whose influences look backward to the Beaux-Arts school that was popular in the 1890s (check out the exquisite cut-stone segmental arches crowning the windows on the lower floors, featuring keystone voussoirs in the shape of ancones) as well as forward to the Colonial Revival that would come to prominence in subsequent years (exemplified by the splayed lintels above the upper-story windows). Notable as well are the entrance portico, crowned by a bracketed cornice and balustrade to match the ones at the roofline of the building itself, and the wrought-iron balconets adorning most of the windows. Among the prominent Buffalonians who lived at the Del-Nord in the early years of its existence are Henry Burgweger (1879-1954), executive secretary of the Iroquois Brewing Company; Horace Hutchins (1869-1930), vice-president of the Cataract Refining and Manufacturing Company; and local attorney and politico Harlow C. Curtiss (1858-1933).
