Summary
[edit]DescriptionDefence Structures of Two Wars - geograph.org.uk - 245665.jpg |
English: Defence Structures of Two Wars. The relics of two wars. The two brick buildings date from WWII and were part of the elaborate system of defences around RAF Llandwrog. The toy-town fort on the right was built in 1775 to deter a French invasion during the American War of Independence and was manned during the Wars of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic War. Napoleon on the Foryd might sound far fetched. Yet, the last invasion of Britain took place on the Welsh coast in 1797 and the French were active in the troubles in Ireland less than 60 miles to the west. The last time a hostile French fleet passed this way was in 1403, when the French acted in support of Owain Glyndwr's siege of Caernarfon castle. |
