rs under my command.Since under the liberal control of the Superintendent, the arrangements ofthe vessel for the work in which she was engaged had been made verycomplete, and the party on board had become experienced in the conductof most deep-sea operations, opportunity was offered for undertaking dredg-ing at much less trouble and expense than would have been possible witha new organization. There was needed for the dredging operations thedirection of a capable naturalist, which was secured to the full in the serv-ices of Professor Agassiz; but, for the vessel, only such additional appa-ratus was necessary as belonged strictly to a dredging outfit. The adoption of steel-wire rope, although presenting to our minds atthe outset a few difficulties, which we confidently expected to overcomeafter a short experience, simplified matters as compared with what hadpreviously been thought proper in a dredging outfit.
