Summary
[edit]DescriptionDebre Damo.jpg |

English: Debre Damo in the Tigray Region of northern Ethiopia. The prominent mesa or amba (i.e. mountain fortress) is situated northeast of Aksum, and its plateau forms a trapezoïd of 1 km by 400 meters at an altitude of 2,216 m.a.s.l. The ancient monastery on Debre Damo is the oldest standing church in Ethiopia, and is seen as the centre of the Ethiopian church. It is only accessible to men, and can only be reached using one of the plaited leather ropes to scale the 15 meter high cliff. One of Ethiopia's Nine Saints, Za-Mikael Aregawi, would have established the monastery at Debre Damo in the 5th or 6th century. In wartime it served as a refuge for the northern aristocrats, and one of its monks would have been instrumental in the overthrow of the last Zagwe king. The monasteries in turn benefited from gült, or temporary land grants, which were bestowed by the aristocrats.[1]
