There is a great contrast betweenthe scènes you observe hère now and when the doctorsfirst came. Then ail was confusion and despair ; now ailis quiet, and silent but unspeakable happiness prevails.Then the grief-stricken parents regarded their child as lost ;now they know she will live. She is even now almostwell. The doctors seem to regard this brilliant feat as amatter of course, but the family regard it as almost a mir-acle, and are very profuse in their expressions of gratitude. The doctors now retire to the véranda to concludetheir consultation, and to make such other arrangementsas are necessary for the future welfare of their patient. You will now take charge of this case, remarksthe doctor. It is not my patient, she replies, for I hâvenever done any practice for thèse people before. I sup-posed this was one of your families.,, This is my first practice in this family, also, returnsthe doctor. I prefer that you take this case, and see itagain this morning. Can you do it ?

Silently taking the hand of his companion, he placesthe ring upon her finger. A Coïncidence 251 If it is your pleasure, I can. Presently the doctor speaks again. It seems thatit is by a happy coïncidence that we hâve been broughttogether hère, he says. The night is now almost gone, and as they standthere upon the véranda, the moon sending its mellowrays of light through the spreading branches of the trees,a solitary chanticleer sends forth from a distant barnyardthe first note to herald the approaching dawn. The doc-tor takes from his pocket a plain gold ring, and silentlytaking within his own the beautifully formed hand of hiscompanion, he places the ring upon her délicate finger.
