This photo shows police in Coventry supporting a youth summer Olympic event in Cheylesmore. Coventry's Cheylesmore neighbourhood policing team and partner agencies came together to host the summer of Olympic activities for local young people. The ‘Cheylesmore Olympic Games’, at Cheylesmore Community Centre kicked off on 25 July with an opening ceremony to promote the summer of sport activities for local eight to 15 year olds. Whitefriars Housing, Sky Blues in the Community, The Blakemore Foundation and several local businesses all contributed to the project and are assisting with the activities taking place. All sessions are run by Sky Blues in the Community who will arrange free sporting activities such as football, javelin, hockey and many more Olympic-themed sports. PCSO Sarah Coton said: “Every year we work with Whitefriars to get funding to keep local young people busy over the summer holidays, also adding funds from the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA). “The programme will provide a positive direction for the local young people of Cheylesmore. In the past, schemes like this have reduced anti-social behaviour in local areas.” There will be a closing ceremony at the end of August where medals and certificates will be presented. |
