Italiano: Da sinistra verso destra: Guido Cavalcanti (che recita ad alta voce le poesie di Guido Guinizzelli, che a quel tempo era già morto), Dante (il melograno che tiene in mano è in arte simbolo di immortalità), Giotto (mentre dipinge il celebre ritratto di Dante affrescato nella cappella del Podestà, nel palazzo del Bargello) e Cimabue (maestro di Giotto). Sotto l'impalcatura è presente Beatrice tra le donne in processione verso la chiesa. Scrive Rossetti in una lettera datata 1º gennaio 1853: «In questo modo ho rappresentato tutte le dimensioni più influenti della giovinezza di Dante – Arte, Amicizia e Amore – con una vicenda reale che le incorpora tutte. Credo che la combinazione sia la migliore mai riuscitami per illustrare questo momento della vita del poeta, e anche il disegno è certamente tra i più belli che abbia mai realizzato». (cfr.
