Description
Français : Une des plaques explicatives rivées au sol, sur le parvis de la gare de Thouars (79). On y lit:
  • UN TOBOGGAN POUR LE CHARBON

Le dépôt accueille de nombreux équipements nécessaires aux locomotives: lampisterie et châteaux d'eau contre la gare, des parcs à charbon, des huileries-sableries et un “toboggan” pour le chargement du charbon et des briquettes, près du triage et du quartier de la Folie. Avec l'arrivée des motrices diesel en 1967, le nombre de locomotives à vapeur diminue et leur exploitation s'achève en 1971. C'est la fin de l'âge d'or de cet ancien bastion de la vapeur.

Les “briquettes” dont il est question montent de Tonnay-Charente, non loin de Rochefort (17), où elles sont essentiellement réalisées à partir de charbon importé d'Angleterre, dans une usine dédiée. Site appartenant à la maison Charvet & fils, aujourd'hui partie du groupe TotalEnergies, bien connu pour ses camions sillonnant les routes, livrant particuliers en fioul et combustibles divers...
