Description

Tapestry depicting Damiate legend that hangs in the Haarlem City Hall, in Haarlem, the Netherlands.

On April 12, 1629, Haarlem began payments for "The Ship of Damiate". Designer Cornelis Claesz. van Wieringen received 300 Flemish pounds. The glasscutter Pieter van Holstein, who made the pattern, received 225 Flemish pounds, and later another 25 Flemish pounds for the binding. The Haarlem tapestry weaver Joseph Thienpont received the amount of 2003 Flemish pounds. The tapestry is 10,75 meters long and 2,40 meters high, and is the largest wall tapestry of the 17th century.
