[edit]DescriptionDamascus monument for first perished Turkish pilots at mausoleum of Sultan Saladin 8149.jpg |
English: This is a monument in the courtyard of the mausoleum of Saladin. A viewer informed me in Turkish about what it concerns. In translation: "Flying with the aircraft named Muavenet-i Milliye Bleriot XI, Fethi Bey and Sadık Bey, after overcoming various difficulties and an accident, departed from Damascus to Jerusalem with a farewell ceremony attended by a large crowd on February 27, 1914. After four hours had passed, when the airplane still did not arrive in Jerusalem, the search was initiated. As a result of the researches, unfortunately, the wreckage of the aircraft and the lifeless bodies of our martyrs were found in the foothills of the Golan hills, about two kilometers from the town of Samra on the shore of Lake Taberiye. The corpses of our first air martyrs were brought to Damascus, which was the Syrian province center at that time, by a special train, and after a great ceremony, they were buried in the garden of the Saladin Tomb in the Umayyad Mosque. Less than two weeks after this painful incident, pilot Nuri Bey and İsmail Hakkı Bey's aircraft (Prince Celaleddin) who took off from Jaffa fell into the sea and had an accident. Nuri Bey, who died in this accident, was buried next to our other martyrs in Damascus as the third martyr of our aviation industry. |
