Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Dal lake is identified with kashmir's scenic beauty, tourism and nature heritage.Located in the Western Himalaya the lake has Zabarwan hill range in its back drop. Famous Chashma shahi ,Nishat & Shalimar Mughal gardens are located in the catchment of the lake. The well known Dachigam national park, the only abode of last surviving population of critically endangered and endemic Kashmir red deer known as Hangul is also located in the catchment area of this lake.Tourists from world over enjoy traditional Shikara(boat) ride and house boats on Dal lake. This important water body offering livelihood and ecological support system is threatened with enormous anthropogenic pressure, weed infestation, pollution and has shrunk in size considerably. The lake absorbs flood water acting as sponge bowl in the heart of Srinagar town, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. Many resident and migratory bird species may lose their habitat and the town would face serious flood threats if this lake is not saved immediately. This heritage of Kashmir needs to be saved for posterity.
