On the east side of the courtyard, the companion to Seokgatap stands. Dabotap (Pagoda of Many Treasures) is truly extraordinary in that it has a very ornate, detailed design that is normally doable on a wooden pagoda but almost impossible on a stone pagoda like this. Its feminine design is a contrast to the conventional masculine design of Seokgatap. Sadly, I came all the way to Gyeongju only to see Dabotap scaffolded for archaeology and restoration work. Bummer. Fortunately, a full-scale replica of Dabotap stands at the Gyeongju branch of National Museum of Korea, so I will be able to visit that the next day. Dabotap is designated as National Treasure No. 20. |
