English: The bearers of historical and mythological messages alike, masks are an important component of First Nations art.
(above) The Raven and the Light is the work of Haida artist Lyle Wilson (1992). According to legend, a raven brought the light of the morning star to humans, using a trick to steal it from a spiteful chief who was keeping it as a treasure. The Moon Mask, is by Tony Hunt Junior (1995), a member of the Kwakiuti nation. During ceremonies, the story is often told of the full moon and its legendary opposition to the half moon. Their rivalry over who will supervise the ceremony of progress makes them take turns imitating each other’s words and movements. |
