Description
  • English: Detail from the "Mosaic of the Seasons", from the Roman era, from Palermo. Regional Archaeological Museum of Palermo, September 28, CE.2006. Photo by Giovanni Dall'Orto. This detail represented the rat of Ganymede by the eagle of Zeus but, like all figures on this side, it was intentionally scarred in ancient times by Christians. The holes thus created were then repaired with crude geometric designs and crosses. It was therefore not damage due to an earthquake, as the captions in the room explain, because the damage is found exclusively (and symmetrically) in correspondence with the pagan figures: they are therefore intentional.

Questo dettaglio rappresentava il ratto di Ganimede da parte dell'aquila di Zeus ma, come tutte le figure di questa parte, è stato sfregiato intenzionalmente in epoca antica dai cristiani. I buchi così creati sono stati poi riparati con rozzi disegni geometrici e croci. Non si è trattato quindi di danni dovuti a un terremoto, come spiegano le didascalie nella sala, perché i danni si riscontrano esclusivamente (e simmetricamente) in corrispondenza delle figure pagane: sono pertanto intenzionali.
