Deutsch: „In Blau zwei durch einen Torbau mit goldenem (gelbem) Tor verbundene goldene (gelbe) Kirchen, die rechte mit Spitzdach, die linke mit Doppelzwiebel, auf den mit schwarzen Wetterhähnen bekrönten Türmen; dazwischen schwebend eine goldene (gelbe) Krone, ein waagerechtes goldenes (gelbes) Zepter und eine goldene (gelbe) Zunftlade.“ Das Wappen der Kreisstadt zeigt die durch ein Stadttor miteinander verbundene Evangelische Kirche und die Katholische Lambertuskirche sowie eine Krone, ein Zepter und eine Zunftlade zwischen beiden Kirchtürmen. Das Wappen entstammt einem Zunftabzeichen der "Fabricanten und Handwerker der Freiheit Mettmann" von 1778. Es wurde Stadtwappen vom 19. Jahrhundert bis 1938 und erneut seit 1946. 1966 wurde es geringfügig in die heutige Form verändert.
English: „Azure, two, through a gate building Or with gate Or combined churches Or, the left tower with a steeple and the right with a butt spire, both on the top with wheatercocks sable; between the towers pending a crown, a sceptre and guild ark, all Or.“ The coat of arms shows in gold on a blue background with a gate connected to each other, the Protestant Church and the Catholic Church St. Lambert and a gem-encrusted crown, scepter and ark between the two bell towers.
