Title
DENO-E96085: Late Iron Age Early Roman Terret Ring
Description
English: A heavily abraded fragment of a cast copper alloy late Iron Age or Early Roman (1st century AD) terret ring of platform decorated type. The hoop is of the cast-in-one variety with an integral rather than a separate attachment bar. Approximately one third of the original hoop survives which includes most of the plain attachment bar, which is sub-rectangular in section, and part of the hoop, which is sub-round in section, and tapers from a flared starting point at the attachment bar becoming narrower along the length of the extant hoop. Integrally cast into this loop is a sub-rectangular platform, which still has traces of red, blue and possibly yellow enamel on its surface although it is too worn for any clear design to be discerned. Based on similar parallels it is likely that this terret ring had a total of three of these decorated platforms, one to either side of the hoop and one at the top of the hoop.

Terrets were attached to the yoke in carts or chariots and served as a guide for the reins.
