[edit]DescriptionDC-5 (USAAF C-110) over New Guinea 1942.jpg |
English: A United States Army Air Force C-110 (VH-CXA) transport aircraft used to carry supplies from Australia to New Guinea. Four DC-5s were purchased by the Netherlands and all four were used to evacuate civilians from Java to Australia in 1942. One was damaged at Kemajoran airport, Batavia, on 9 February 1942, and was captured by the Japanese and later test flown at Tachikawa air force base. The surviving three aircraft were operated by the Allied Directorate of Air Transport and were given the USAAF designation of C-110.
Note: The DC-5 c/n 428 was delivered as PH-AXE to the Dutch KLM airline, then became PK-ADB with KNILM. It received the civil registry VH-CXA and was badly damaged at Parafield, South Australia, on 17 August 1942. Parts were used to rebuilt VH-CXC.[1] The AWM date (9 September 1942) has to be incorrect.
