Summary

[edit]
Description Introduced, warm season, annual to perennial, tufted sedge 5-40 cm tall, with or without a very short rhizome. Leaves are bright-green, shiny, hairless, grass-like and to long as the stems. Flowerheads are very light green to white, oblong, dense, 6-12 mm long; with numerous spikelets (up to 100) and often 1-2 bumps at the base of the flowerhead. 3-4 leaf-like bracts occur below the flowerhead; they are long, narrow and often reflexed downwards. Flowering is in spring and summer. A widespread and very common weed of lawns, pastures and disturbed areas of coastal NSW. Found on a wide range of soil types, but preferring wet sandier soils. Produces little bulk and is of little importance for grazing animals. It emits a sweet aroma when its leaves are mowed or crushed. Generally control is not required. If invasive, it can be controlled by improving drainage, sowing pasture species that are best suited to the growing conditions or allowing surrounding vegetation to grow tall and shade it out.
