Ce Reynolds 20 000 (basé sur l'épaisseur des cylindres vue par l'écoulement) est un Reynolds sous-critique : sur ce graphe n'apparait donc pas la crise de traînée de ces cylindres.
Lorsque le Reynolds prend des valeurs supercritiques, le graphe se complique énormément :
Les courbes en tiretés noirs relient les cylindres d'une même présentation (C ou F). Leur étagement en ordonnées est dû à l'évolution de l'angle de séparation de l'écoulement (angle qui est lié à l'angle des faces des cylindres).
Les courbes blanches sont des propositions de courbes reliant les marques de cylindres mesurés aux marques de cylindres qui n'ont pas été mesurés par Xu et coll. (les marques de cylindres non mesurés étant évidemment d'abscisses connues). Par exemple la marque 8C est ainsi reliée aux marques non mesurées 9C et 10C, ce qui donne une première estimation du Cx de ces cylindres...
Le Cx du cylindre est évidemment sous-critique sur ce graphe.
Ce graphe résume les mesures de Xu, Zhang, Gan, Li et Zhou relatées dans le texte : EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF flOW AROUND POLYGON CYLINDERS, S. J. Xu, W. G. Zhang, L. Gan, M. G. Li and Y. Zhou, Durham Research Online. Ces mesures semblent périmer beaucoup de valeurs de Cx qu'on trouve dans la littérature, par exemple pour le cylindre à section hexagonale.
Ces cylindres (ou prismes) sont présentés perpendiculairement à l'écoulement. Leur Cx est toujours établi en référence à la largeur D vue par l'écoulement et, bien sûr, l'envergure du cylindre mesurée parallèlement à son axe et supposée infinie. Comme toujours dans de tels cas, les mesures de Xu, Zhang, Gan, Li et Zhou sont faites entre parois, l'écoulement étant supposé 2D, au moins en son centre.
Cette courbe en tiretés bleu clair est une proposition de continuation vers la droite de la courbe en trait continu bleu clair. Ses intersections avec les courbes blanches sont donc à prendre avec prudence.
La courbe bleu clair en trait continu relie les cylindres 3F, 5C et 7F présentant chacun le même type de partie médiane.
La courbe orange relie les cylindres 3C, 5F et 7C présentant chacun le même type de partie médiane.
Les auteurs de cette étude constatent que les mesurés par eux, représentés en prenant comme abscisses le nombre de côtés des cylindres, forment "une grille cartésienne distordue" ("a distorted Cartesian mesh pattern"). Ce que l'on observe, de fait, avec les courbes en tiretés noirs et les courbes orange, rouges, bleu clair et bleu dense.
