Description

The N-9H was a seaplane version of the famous JN-4D ‘Jenny’. 560 were built and saw US Navy service between 1917 and 1927. This is the only surviving example and was part of the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry until 1957 when it was purchased by the US Navy on behalf of the Smithsonian Institute. It was officially transferred to the Smithsonian in 1963 and was restored in 1966 by the Naval Air Engineering Laboratory in Philadelphia. Some sources refer to this machine as having the US Navy serial No A4236, but that serial was a Curtiss HS flying boat. Seen on display in the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum. Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia
