Description
English: Cultivation Terraces. I walked across these fields two months ago and never noticed them. The OS map indicates the main area lies to the north of the Reeth to Muker road but seen from Harkerside this area to the south is most noticeable. They could well date from the bronze age and were in use throughout the iron age to provide stable ground for the cultivation of crops. The area was a rich source of precious metals, lead and silver, which provided the impetus to establish a settlement in a region of otherwise marginal productive land.
